Rest Easy, Singapore: Improve Sleep with HPB Resources

Singapore, a bustling metropolis known for its efficiency and high standard of living, has also garnered attention for its focus on well-being. This includes a growing emphasis on sleep health. According to a recent study conducted by the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singaporeans are increasingly aware of the importance of sleep and are taking steps to improve their sleep quality.

The study, published in the Journal of Sleep Research, found that a significant majority of Singaporeans (75%) believe that sleep is essential for their overall health and well-being. Furthermore, 60% of respondents reported that they have made changes to their lifestyle or sleep habits to improve their sleep quality.

Despite these positive trends, sleep deprivation remains a prevalent issue in Singapore. A 2021 survey conducted by the Health Promotion Board (HPB) revealed that nearly half of Singaporean adults (48%) reported getting less than seven hours of sleep per night. This is in line with global trends, where sleep deprivation is a growing concern.

The consequences of sleep deprivation are far-reaching in Singapore, affecting both physical and mental health. Studies have linked insufficient sleep to a higher risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity. Additionally, sleep deprivation can impair cognitive function, leading to decreased productivity, poor decision-making, and increased risk of accidents. To address the sleep deprivation epidemic, Singapore has implemented various initiatives to promote healthy sleep habits. The HPB has launched campaigns and educational programs to raise awareness about the importance of sleep and provide practical tips for improving sleep quality. Learn more here.
